frequently asked questions for guitars

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

  • Eastman guitars are distinguished by their hand-made lutherie. This means key components like acoustic bracing are meticulously hand-scalloped and the guitar tops are tap-tuned (processes usually reserved for high-end boutique brands). This hands-on approach and commitment to all-solid tonewoods (on most series) result in superior resonance, volume, and an articulate, responsive tone often compared to vintage American instruments, but at a better value.

    • Traditional (E-Series): These models pay homage to vintage designs of the 1930s and 40s (like D-style or OM-style). They feature classic specs, traditional neck profiles, and are generally designed for pure acoustic performance.

    • AC (Auditorium Cutaway) Series: These feature a more modern Grand Auditorium body shape with a cutaway and often come equipped with quality electronics (like LR Baggs) for ease of stage performance and recording versatility.

  • Thermo-curing is a process where the solid spruce top wood is baked in a controlled, oxygen-free environment. This accelerates the natural aging process, crystallizing the wood's resins. A Thermo-Cured top gives the guitar a vintage, "played-in" tone immediately, offering enhanced resonance, better projection, and the open, rich sound typically found only in guitars that are decades old.

  • Eastman is known for offering a wide range of archtops. While some affordable entry-level models (like the AR371) use laminate for the body (which helps reduce feedback), their premium and traditional archtops (like the AR series) feature hand-carved solid spruce tops and solid maple backs. This commitment to carved solid wood gives their archtops an acoustic complexity and resonance that few modern builders achieve in this price category.

  • "Truetone" is Eastman's proprietary thin-coat finish (often poly-based, similar to the high-end Bourgeois finish). It is designed to be just as thin and acoustically resonant as nitrocellulose, allowing the wood to breathe and vibrate freely. While the traditional satin or gloss nitro finishes are still available on some models, Truetone offers better durability and environmental advantages while maintaining the minimal thickness required for superior tone.
